TOTAL RECALL OR TOTAL REALITY? HOW TO DESIGN THE FUTURE OF YOUR DREAMS
‘Both tears and sweat are salty but they render a different result. Tears will get you sympathy, sweat will get you change’. Jesse Jackson
I once saw a movie ‘Total Recall’ which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. In it, he attended a business which specialised in helping people create whatever future they wanted. Once the specifics of this fantasy future were determined, the company would imprint this plan into the brain of the client so that they could ‘experience’ this new future, as if it had been real.
As I watched, I thought to myself, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could do that for real – if people could just be able to create a new future and have it come true’.
Well we can, and we do every day – and so can you…
In fact, that’s what the essence of true coaching is all about. It’s focussed on clearly identifying what bright future you want and then using tools to craft that dream into a reality.
I’m not sure, but you may be thinking to yourself, ‘Wow, I’d love to get some of that!’ If you are then congratulations – you are exactly where you should be. But before you jump on the phone or email to book an appointment with your coach, would you like some steps to follow that will help you prepare yourself best for that coaching experience? If so, then read on…
Step One – Get Clear!
Our unconscious mind is our best ally in achieving our goals in life – so
we want to enlist its help. What you may not know is that the
unconscious mind responds directly to our focus; in other words what
we put our attention on (good or bad). You see, our focus determines
our results in life – so if we are focussing on a lot of different
things at once, our unconscious mind cannot pick which focus is the
one we really want, so we end up missing out on the
things that are of most importance to us. So, one way to get the
unconscious mind on task to help us achieve our desired future is to
spell that future out – detail by detail, in living colour. You
do this by imagining what you really want in terms of a future – if
the sky were the limit – what would you really what to be, do
and have in life? Write it down – be specific, clear and
detailed. Use all your five senses. In other words, what
would this future taste like, feel like, smell like, sound like and
look like. Write it all down. Once you’ve done this,
take time to refine it and refine it further until you say, ‘Eureka – this
is exactly the future I really want’.
Step Two – Get a Future Board
A future board is like a mosaic of images and words to describe your desired future. Put pictures and writing on a large cardboard sheet. Photos you’ve taken yourself, images from newspapers and magazines, as well as printed text you’ve created yourself or cut out of magazines are all put together in a collage to illustrate your desired future – really go for it – use colour, shape, and glitter to make the future board come alive. Then underneath (or on top) of all these images and text specify in words exactly what you want your future to be – clearly and succinctly.
Step Three – Practise, practise, practise
They say that practise makes perfect, but in reality, it’s perfect
practise that makes perfect. There are a couple of simple things
you can do to achieve ‘perfect practise’ when it comes to
designing your future. Some of these ideas are as follows:
- Experience your new future daily. Each night
before bed and each morning when you first awake, take a minute to ‘experience’ your
desired future. Close your eyes and imagine that you already
have that future – what it would feel/taste/smell/touch/sound
and look like. Get the emotion and excitement building and then
lock it into your consciousness. Doing this will give your unconscious
mind a clear blueprint of what to create during the day. Don’t
dwell on it all day though, daydreaming your life away – you
want to clearly target this future to your unconscious mind, but not
dwell on it so much that your unconscious mind believes you’re
already there – you want it to be ‘hungry’ to get
what you really want.
- Review your future board. Place your future
board on the wall in a prominent place and review it each time you
walk past it.
- Gratitude now. Be grateful now for
what you will have/do/be. If you have an attitude
of gratitude now for what you will receive, you will feel a powerful
sense of deserving what you will receive. This will help your
unconscious mind avoid being blocked by limiting beliefs that you
don’t deserve what you really want.
- Act now as if you already have it. Dress, act, feel and behave now as if you already had what you really want and feel the difference. It’s a little like wearing in a pair of new shoes around the house before a big night. Doing this will help solidify the new future in your nervous system. This is different from just day dreaming about your future (see ‘Experience your future daily’), because now you are putting action into thoughts. This action demonstrates to your unconscious mind that you are absolutely determined to be/do/have what you want – so it will get busy helping you too.
Using these simple, yet powerful, techniques above will help you enormously to achieve the future that you really want. Be mindful though that as you do these things, you may find negative thoughts, feelings and beliefs come to the surface. These will need to be cleared before all your dreams will come true. Seek the help of a qualified and experienced coach to eliminate these issues which may be sabotaging your success.
With these techniques above, and the help of your excellent coach, you’ll not only be able to have Total Recall of your desired future, you’ll also be able to experience it for real!
